我的祖籍 的历史,my ancestrial history

i'm a 4th generation singaporean chinese born in the year 1977 ,

my grand father is from xiamen ,amoy dialect region ( 海定)闽南福建省,

my mother is mix cantonese with my grand mother from guangzhou, (广州)广附人
the the past the olden days cantonese people, call the place they came from by various names
like sze yap , 四 邑 , taishanese ; sam yap 三 邑 , i have been researching what is the ,meaning of 邑(yi) in dictionary , its means city or metropolitan , in ancient chinese ,

my grand father on my mother's side is from jinmen (kinmen) 金门,now its in the control of
taiwan,

i have been traveling to many parts of asia due to the nature and requirement of my work ,
frequent visit to various parts of china , and especially guang dong, fujian , zhejiang , and the southern part of china , has helped my better understanding of the places and regions which my
great grand parents came from ,

guang dong province has a wide diverse range of Han languages ,
some of us in singapore may have the mis-conception that all of guang dong speaks cantonese
广洲话, its not really true , areas like swatow, shantou ( 汕头), shanwei , (汕尾)潮汕 area is within guangdong province , in singapore some singaporean chinese aknowledge they are from tio chew , or teo chew ,( chaozhou) 潮州人, nowadays in mainland china , teo chew there call themselves , 潮汕人, chaoshan ren , its a new ways of addressing for teochews in china,

in the situation if you meet up , with a teochew in china , you will know how to relates to the
person with common ancestral back ground ,

in guang dong , especially in zhong shan (中山话) area , the locals speaks a isolated form of ( min) 闽南话derived, from southern fujian , the speech resembles , amoy dialects but its quite difficult for us to understand . due to the length of them which the community have live within itself , the people migrated into zhongshan in guangdong province from fujian , during the southern song dynasty as to escape war , and famine ,

the leizhou dialects is one of the dialects which catches my particular interest,
leizhou peninsula , the stretch of land linking hainan island to guangdong province ,

its people speaks leizhou dialect related to hainanese but , its not easy for the two to communicate using each own individual languages ,
the difference is liken to the similiarities of hokkien and teo chew , or even wider,

although leizhou dialect community has quite a high possibility of overseas migration out of china in the past , due to its location , and the case of the surrounding dialects large overseas diaspora we can find in present time ,

leizhou dialect , has been left ou in this part of history , very strange , you can't find much
leizhou people in south east asia , or other parts of the world other than in guang dong

why i love my chinese dialect in singapore, 我们的 新加坡 华人的方言

hello , to every one

i just want to say da jia hao( 大家好),to all of you visiting this blog

in singapore , the early immigrant chinese came here
bringing with them the language of their home town , (家乡话)jia xiang hua,
which we know them chinese dialect , 方言 ( fangyan )

to the generation of chinese born after the 80s the exposure and contacts to chinese dialects
have been steadily in decline , in replacement of our own chinese dialects ( 我们的方言)
which our ah gong , and ah ma , ah po spoke , (our grand parents and parents language )
language of our ancestors ( 我们祖先的话)
we have switch to using ,mandarin (华语)(普通话)and eventually finding our selves even more comfortable in using english to our people,

in our surroundings and daily lives some questions will linger our mind

if you ask me why should you know your own roots and learn your own chinese dialects ??

i can specify the reason below for your understanding and referrence

1) being the emergence of greater china regions , 大中华地区;
(hong kong , macau, mainland china , taiwan , ) the importance of learning mandarin, chinese culture , chinese ways of thinking ,儒家思想 , (guan xi ) 人际关系, chinese business methods ,
will will come to plays great importance in this coming era ,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_China

2) due to the increase numbers people learning mandarin language world wide ,

knowing to speak mandarin will no longer be a rare asset , we can find ,
a considerable numbers of caucasian , indian , or people of other races speaking very fluent
(华语)han yu , putong hua , mandarin nowadays its already a very common thing in singapore and worldwide , our own dialects are the vehicle and instrument which locals can use to rediscover our roots and re forge the missing Links , to a wide international networks of oversea chinese ( hai wai huaren ) businesses in the region and world wide ,
creating the competitive advantage in the work we do and industry we belongs to ,

3) oversea chinese especially with ancestry in southern china ,
are all over the world , if you intend to do import and export business , trading business , commodities business , shipping/ freight forwarding business ,
manufacturering business, banking business and many more etc

(In many parts of the world the oversea chinese speaks the same dialects or dialects which we are familiar to in singapore , ) use your knowlege of chinese
dialects to enhance the better chance of closing a deal , getting a business contact , strengthing of business ties oversea , if you are thinkin far and wide

5) our own dialects offer us locals singaporeans , a glimpse our own special historical heritage,
and why we speak differently from standard mandarin ,

most of the southern dialects hokkien , cantonese, hakka, hainanese , shanghainese, hokchiu, and etc , are ancient middle and old archiac chinese languages which originates
from northern central china , during the Warring States Period ,春秋战国 , Spring and Autumn Period ,战国时代; han dynasty period , 漢朝; and tang dynasty period ,

during the periods of war and time of great change in rulling dynasty , through history
the people from central china , move to southern china to the present day guangdong, hainan island and fujian , zhejiang province, the new comers intermingle with the locals tribes ,in fujian and guangdong , creating a fusion of special speech which is our chinese dialects is todays ,

my brothers and sister , be proud of our own chinese dialects , if you own a Han dynasty , or tang dyansty work of art you will be a millionaire , now our chinese dialects have at least 3000 years
of history or more

, in the same time line as the ancients dynasty , by speaking the language your are a already
keeping a recorded treasure , which is priceless , be proud of it my brothers and sisters,

all the ancients (song ) (tang) poetry could be recited by using our dialects like hokkian , cantonese , hakka. teochew , hainanese , hokchiu , shanghainese ,

which is like the same relationship of Latin to modern days french , italian , spanish , portuguese ,

learning dialects holds the key , the quick mastering of japanese and korean , vietnamese ,
as the 3 languages, some of the sound are very similiar to the ones in cantonese , hokkien ,

hokkien and cantonese in 3 kingdom times , belongs areas close to WU kingdom (吴国)
japanese , korean in those days are very close to wu kingdom , in business and diplomacy
the use the same pronuciation as us

japanese --- bu dou, hokkien , also budou ( meaning grapes ) mandarin, "pu tao "

korean ----ien pil , hokkien , also yam pit ( meaning pencil ) mandarin : jian bi "

japanese ----shim bun, hokkien sim bun ( news ) mandarin " xin wen "

and many more similiarities,

our chinese dialects are beautiful and special ,
please treasure it wisely ,
please use it daily ,

please don't misrepresent it ,
please don't misunderstand it ,
pleaes don't lose it ,

please revive in in the best effort you can ,

because its is a significant part of our own uniqueness , and identity ,
you and me we can do it !!,

你和我都尽一份力量, 我们可以般得到 ,大家加油
